Advice needed
I'm thinking about moving from Blogger to Word Press. Any thoughts? Alternative suggestions?

How much is your blog worth?

I use word press and I'm particularly happy with it.
I've used blogger and it gave me the shits.
Couldn't comment on any other program though.
I definitely recommend wordpress. Much better dashboard and more features, general better usability.
I run http://aketus.wordpress.com which of course is a free one but I lose some control over the design because it's run on wordpress's server.
Anarcobase is also wordpress but run on a database of my own which gives me some extra options.
Wordpress also tends to have a better up-time than blogger although it has had some minor problems over the last week
oh another thing, why not just start a free one before you consider abandoning Blogger just in case you discover you don't like it.
The ones you run yourself on your own host are at wordpress.org rather than .com
Good luck
What's wrong with Blogger? Or are you protesting against Google..
hmm, well Wordpress has managed to successfully break this site in the meantime. I did that transfer service that they have (which impressed me heaps), which managed to delete all the line breaks from every post I've ever made (which imnpressed me zero!).
I don't have any issues with Blogger, just got to play with the back end of Word Press recently and I like the idea of being able to properly manage categories, something Blogger still hasn't gotten around to.
That touches on one aspect I dislike about the 2.0 version of WP. Like most evolving software, it is becoming increasingly obsessed with making things prettier and simpler. The new version sometimes thinks it knows better than you do in terms of html conversion. Often if I am editing a post, if I want to add a line break, I have to click the 'html' button and do it myself because it will ignore my Enter button. Oddly, this doesn't happen when posting from scratch. Similar problems with href-ing.
And yet the problem seems to also be related to your browser. Firefox gives me this problem. Opera loves my html in WP. Strange
Am I getting too geeky?
Other than that it's fine software. I know that blogsome exists, and typepad, but I believe typepad is not free
Also, and sorry to be clogging your blog, but in response to rich, when I was using blogger way back, I found that it got increasingly slower to use, is this still a problem?
& I am still pleased that despite not having word verification switched on, WP handles spam quite efficiently.
I'll stop plugging :)
Don't worry, I'm loving this conversation! It's why I started it :) Thanks heaps for all your thoughts.
Aketus, your problem is easily overcome (as I found the same problem).
If I remember correctly you go to Options > writing and then check the box about the visual rich editor (or something.
Then it just goes back to the way it was with version 1.x which I much preferred.
ah! Thanks hammy! Your help has led to an interesting (and disappointing)discovery:
Free *.wordpress.com blogs don't have as many features. One of the features lacking is this 'visual rich editor' toggle. Shame.
When you download wordpress and run it off a database on your own host, you've got the complete package (it's still free but of course you need your own domain/host for this service).
So on anarcobase.com I can toggle but on aketus.wordpress.com I can't. How odd to reduce options like that. Oh well
No probs at all.
